They don’t need no education... Well, at least not for two weeks, because the kids are officially on spring break!
With the end of Term 3 today and the start of the school holidays on Monday, parents across our fine city are cashing in their annual leave as the kids take a much-needed break from the classroom.
And while most of the two-week break will be spent having downtime at home, in the backyard, at friends’ houses, and at the park, in between these times it’s hard to come up with things to do with the kids to keep them entertained after the novelty of doing nothing has worn off.
The good news is that it’s Spring, and Sydney is coming alive again with things to do as we move into summer.
So, as we always do, here is our Home And Family top-five round-up of the coolest things to do this school holidays. Hopefully it’ll give you some inspo for when the kids start to drive everyone mad!

1 Oz Comic-Con
For the older kids, the superhero/comic book nerds or the young at heart, this event kicks off the holidays this weekend. Get the chance to meet the makers and creators of your favourite comic, tv, movie or anime series at this must-attend exhibition, plus meet famous actors including Riverdale’s KJ Apa, who plays heartthrob Archie Andrews on the popular series – available on Netflix. If you don’t want to brave the queues at the meet and greets, there’s so much more to buy, do and experience when it comes to all things sci-fi, comic books, shows, movies and anime. Your little superhero is sure to have fun. And don’t forget to win extra parent points by turning up in a cool cosplay outfit!

2 Play World
If comic books aren’t your thing or you have younger kiddies, Play World is the expo for you. Designed for ages 4-12, it’s a place where kids can play, play, play – a place where kids rule the adults! The event has games and toys for kids to test out, from companies like Nickelodeon and Nintendo. It has creative play spaces where your littlies can craft their finest work or bounce around on Springfree trampolines. With sponsors LEGO, Cartoon Network and Taronga Zoo joining the great line-up of exhibits, Play World packs out the Convention Centre with loads of things for kids to see, play with and experience. It’ll keep them going for hours! Parenting sorted.

3 Dora and the Lost City of Gold
Every school holidays has a headlining movie event, and this is it! The much-anticipated live-action movie features a high-school aged Dora the jungle explorer and friends (Boots included!), as they embark on their most dangerous journey yet: saving Dora’s parents while discovering the mysteries of a lost Incan civilisation. Your Dora fan will love you forever!
When: In cinemas now.
Age: PG-13+, or accompanied by an adult.

4 Timezone Haymarket (previously Play Time)
Sick of your kids in front of screens all day? Why not make it a social family event instead, by taking them to Timezone in Haymarket! It’s basically a massive arcade with old and new arcade-style games – and I assure you it’s fun for the whole family. Let mum and dad try their hands at space invaders or air hockey, while the kids have a turn at Mario Kart, bowling, bumper cars or virtual reality. It’s for old and young kids, and kids at heart who would like a dose of nostalgia!

Let the kids get down in the dirt at Elizabeth Farm this school holidays.

5 Elizabeth Farm, Rosehill
If you’re really looking for a digital detox for your fam, come on over to Elizabeth Farm – where the kids can get dirt on their hands and a green thumb in the process in the farm’s veggie garden. The kids can enjoy a tasting tour of local honey, freshly made ice tea and edible flowers. Plus, there are family friendly tours inside one of the oldest homesteads in Australia, a tea room, and lots of spring delights awaiting you in the garden. Get the family back to their colonial roots at this lovely farm and homestead the kids will love.
