Professional family photo shoots fall into one of two camps; ‘this is going to be a hoot’ or ‘stressful’.

Other than trying to control and coordinate the family members, including young kids and newborns, the issue of “what do I wear?” comes into play, remembering that these are meant to be everlasting memories for the years/generations to come.

Capturing precious family moments in photographs is an experience that many of us continue to do so.

The right outfits can make all the difference in creating stunning, lasting memories.

If you are wanting a memory of your newborn along with immediate and extended family members, it’s quite reasonable to be thinking "what should we wear for our family photoshoot?"

In this guide, I’ll outline some simple guidelines to follow.

Coordinate don't match: the days of everyone wearing identical outfits are over.

Instead, think of a colour scheme that complements each other.

For example, earthy tones, pastels, or even a mix of cool and warm colours can create a visually appealing and harmonious look.

Dress for the season: consider the season and location of your photoshoot

Light, breathable fabrics work well for summer sessions, while layered outfits and cozy sweaters are perfect for autumn and winter.

Adapting to the weather ensures everyone is comfortable and happy during the shoot. The great thing about doing your photoshoot at your home, means you have the versatility to change easily or adapt if the weather changes!

Avoid ‘busy patterns’: loud prints and busy patterns can be distracting

Instead, opt for solid colours or subtle, non-distracting patterns. This allows the focus to remain on your family and emotions. That being said, we have had some very unique shoots where it was just the perfect definition of that family - so be yourself as well!

Accessorise thoughtfully

Accessories like scarves, hats, or statement jewellery can add a touch of personality to your outfits and overall image.

However, it’s best not to overdo it, remember the adage, less can be more!

Dress for your style

Choose outfits that reflect your family's personality and style.

Whether you prefer a casual, relaxed look or a more formal attire, ensure it feels authentic to you.

In other words, dress in what’s comfortable and natural to you all.

Comfort

This is especially true for your little ones, i.e. newborns and especially for little ones, prioritise comfort.

If you’re aiming for a stress free and fun photoshoot, It's essential that babies and children feel at ease in their outfits to capture those genuine smiles and expressions.
